Commentary - Counting the Bodies
:The British-based Web site Iraq Body Count recently released a revised report stating that the U.S. led invasion of Iraq has killed 24,865 civilians in the two years since the invasion took place. The Iraq Body Count study went on to say that U.S. forces are responsible for thirty-seven percent of civilian deaths, anti-occupation forces/insurgents for nine percent, and post-invasion criminal violence accounted for thirty-six percent of all deaths. Over forty percent of civilian deaths took place during the invasion phase, which bodes well for the American military’s job during occupation. But no one will ever be able to verify these numbers. U.S. forces do not count civilian casualties. Nor do any of the other occupiers or the UN. This is a mistake. Part of the effort in spreading Democracy to a new country, should also be teaching responsibility. Currently no one is taking any responsibility, including the counting and identifying, of those that have died.
