Liberia

:

Tuesday, after 14 years of civil war that had transformed the nation from the model republic to a backwards stereotypical African state, the first democratic election took place in 1997. The 1.2 million registered voters are young, half are under 31, and over half female. While, there are 22 candidates, the two front runners appear to be George Weah, a 40-year old soccer star who played for two top European clubs, and Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, a 66-year old Harvard-educated former government minister who would be the first elected leader of an African nation. Over one million voters voted in the first election and results will be announced in a week and a half.
